Volunteer with MARL!

The life-saving work that we do at MARL would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteers. From walking dogs to working off-site events, our volunteers provide endless support to MARL’s mission.

Your first step is to fill out an application. Once reviewed and approved, you will be contacted about signing up for an in-person Orientation at our facility. Volunteer Orientations are held three times a month. During the orientation, you will have the opportunity to tour our facility, cover the skills necessary to be successful as a MARL volunteer and schedule a training with a seasoned MARL volunteer to get started.

There is a one-time, non-refundable program fee of $40 per person to volunteer. This fee, collected at the time of orientation, includes your volunteer t-shirt and name tag along with many training and educational opportunities.

Cat Care Program

MARL’s Cat Rooms and Cage-Free Cat Room are maintained primarily by volunteers!  We need help cleaning each of these rooms in the morning before our shelter opens to the public. General duties include cleaning, doing dishes, scooping litter boxes, and providing the cats with food, clean water, and clean bedding. In addition to cleaning, we also need volunteers to help socialize our cats and kittens throughout the day.

To volunteer in our cat rooms you need to be at least 18 years old.

Dog Care Program

The Dog Care Program at MARL gives you the opportunity to form relationships with our dogs while providing them with enrichment and socialization. This program is available to volunteers who complete a basic training. Dog walkers must be 18 years old.

Offsite Cat Adoption Centers

PetSmart in Northville houses a number of adoptable MARL cats in their adoption center. PetSmart volunteers work as a team to ensure that our cats have a clean place to live and plenty of socialization!
