Every second chance begins with you. The life-saving work we do at MARL simply wouldn’t be possible without the compassion, time, and dedication of our volunteers. From walking dogs and socializing cats to representing MARL at community events, our volunteers are an essential part of every transformation story. If you’re ready to make a difference, we’d love to hear from you!
How to Get Started
Your first step is to complete a Volunteer Application.
Once your application is reviewed and approved, you’ll be invited to attend an in-person Orientation at our facility. Orientations are held three times each month and include:
A behind-the-scenes tour of our shelter
An overview of volunteer expectations and skills
Guidance on selecting the program that’s right for you
Scheduling your hands-on training with an experienced MARL volunteer
There is a one-time, non-refundable $40 program fee, collected at orientation. This includes your MARL volunteer t-shirt, name badge, and access to ongoing training and educational opportunities.
Cat Care Program
Our Cat Rooms and Cage-Free Cat Room are primarily supported by volunteers.
Morning volunteers help prepare these spaces before the shelter opens to the public. Responsibilities may include:
Cleaning rooms and enclosures
Washing dishes
Scooping litter boxes
Refreshing food, water, and bedding
Beyond daily care, volunteers also provide essential enrichment and socialization throughout the day, helping shy cats build confidence and playful kittens burn off energy.
Minimum age: 18
Dog Care Program
Our Dog Care Program allows volunteers to build meaningful connections with our dogs while providing exercise, enrichment, and positive social experiences.
Volunteers who complete basic training can become dog walkers and enrichment volunteers, helping reduce stress and increase adoptability for our shelter dogs.
Minimum age: 18
Offsite Cat Adoption Centers
MARL partners with PetSmart in Northville to house adoptable cats in their adoption center.
Offsite volunteers work as a team to:
Maintain clean and welcoming living spaces
Provide daily care
Offer socialization and enrichment
These volunteers play a critical role in helping our cats shine in front of potential adopters.
If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back, gain experience, or be part of something bigger than yourself, volunteering with MARL is a powerful place to start.
